Dear Mr. Butcher, I'm sorry

Dear Mr. Butcher, I'm sorry

March 15, 2017

Dear Mr. Butcher,
This is probably going to be one of the oddest apology notes you may have ever gotten.  Not being a stalker I can’t say for sure but I’m going to go with one of the top ten.

I have enjoyed your Harry Dresden stories, a lot, I have looked forward to each one coming out and I have never been disappointed with the stories in any shape or form.  In fact, I have gone out and reread the series as it has grown to make sure I haven’t lost anything and even have gone as far as buying Kindle editions as well as hard backs.  Thank you for such memorable characters!
Now the apology, I am sorry that I had decided that I was not going to read the ‘Codex Alera’ or as I think of it the ‘Calderon’ series.  I was feeling cheated at the time.  I had said “No, don’t go and start a new series that will mean less time for Harry!”  I had decided to put my foot down, I was not going to spend hard worked for money on something that I had decided I was not going to enjoy in the least without ever having read it.

I was an idiot.

I had gone to my local library and had been checking out books, on a myriad of topics, because I had begun to take my own writing career seriously.  I had completed Gabriela Pereira’s, diyMFA program, and she had said that writers need to read.  That and not to read what you want to write but read everything.  Well going through my reading lists, authors, at the library I found your short story about Thomas, ‘Backup’ and enjoyed that too.  I then had to reconsider my thoughts on the ‘Codex Alera’ because while ‘Backup’ was in the ‘Harry’ universe it wasn’t about him at all.

So of course, I decided to see about checking out the first book, ‘Furies of Calderon’  at my local library and as karma was teaching me a lesson?  I could not get a copy of it.  I have no idea why but it was not ever on the shelf at the library.  I could only find book three whenever I checked.  I am pretty anal and the thought of starting at book three was anathema to me so I did what any self-respecting book-aholic would do, I went to a second-hand bookstore.  Where I found three copies.  Now I know that you don’t receive royalties for a second-hand book purchase, so again, sorry… but I was working through that issue of I wasn’t sure I was going to like it.  I read it and loved it that I went out and purchased the second one and devoured that in a 24-hour period.  That book does go quite well with a cigar and a small glass of scotch.  In case you were curious.

I am in the midst of some stuff at the moment that has curtailed by reading, but, that should be done shortly so I will be going to the bookstore to purchase the rest of the series, one book at a time, as I’m not made of money. 😊   Hopefully one day I will be, lofty goal I know.

So, this all now being said and or to sum up.  I’m sorry, I was wrong, I truly enjoy the ‘Codex Alera’ and am looking forward to reading the rest as well as whenever the next ‘Dresden Files’ book comes out.  Oh, by the way?  If you ever need a beta reader for a ‘Codex’ book or a ‘Dresden Files’ book or some other new thing you might come up with I’d be HAPPY to help out….
